Joy in music and singing
Your child will experience the joy of creating, singing, playing, and listening to quality music in our classroom music, instrumental, and choral programs. Music at Christ Church Grammar School is inclusive, joyous and child-centred, with a place for every child. Children of all abilities have opportunities to perform in joyful celebrations of school music throughout the year.
Confident and capable musicians
Individual instrumental tuition is offered to all children, from those who just want to "have a go" to those with considerable skills who aspire to excel. Your child can pursue their passion for strings, woodwind, brass, piano, percussion, voice, or guitar. Our team of professional musicians provide expert guidance to extend and challenge your child.
Celebrating school music from ELC to Year 6
At Christ Church Grammar School we all sing, and we sing with gusto. We offer a vibrant ensemble and choral program and there are a range of groups to suit different abilities and interests, from our Littlest Possums to our Chapel Choir for Years 5 and 6.
Classroom Music
The classroom music program provides a range of listening, singing and instrumental activities based in the Orff- Schulwerk and Kodaly approaches to music education. Students learn the musical skills, knowledge and techniques to give voice to their creativity.
Instrumental Music Programs
In our group instrumental classes students explore key instrumental groups, gain technical skills and build confidence. We offer an elective ensemble program for students who want to extend their learning and opportunities to perform.
- In our Year 2 String Program students learn the violin, viola or cello in small groups.
- We offer Year 3 students a choice of instrument. Recorder groups provide students with the skills of playing a wind instrument whilst focussing on note reading. For those learning a string instrument privately, a string workshop group is provided to extend and support individual learning.
- In the Year 4 Woodwind Program students are introduced to the clarinet and flute within small group classes.
Choral Music
We are a school that sings and all students from Years 2 to 5 participate in weekly choir sessions. This is a chance to experience the joys of singing and making beautiful music in a large group.
These choirs feed into three elective choirs, providing the children with further opportunities to sing and perform music from a wide range of genres.
Private Instrumental Tuition
We have a team of expert staff with skills as teachers and musicians who provide private instrumental lessons. Lessons are available in violin, viola, cello, flute, clarinet, saxophone, recorder, trumpet, trombone, piano, guitar, percussion and voice.
Ensemble Music
We encourage students from Year 2 onwards to join one of our many musical ensembles. Through playing in musical ensembles children gain a real sense of achievement, and the performances are memorable moments to make music. Ensembles on offer include:

- Super Strings

- Guitar Ensemble
- The Ukustra (ukulele ensemble)
- Drum Attack (percussion ensemble)
- Marimba Ensemble
- Junior Choir
- Senior Choir
- Chapel Choir
Performances
Our students can perform in our regular after-school soirees, in assembly and many other occasions. Students perform within class, in Chapel Services, as part of whole school events such as LOTE Day and the Art Show. Special events include our Hunter Fry Solo Competition and the Music Alive showcase. We have been known to burst into song and bring out our instruments for spontaneous performances around the school.
Daryl Braithwaite Music Scholarship
The Daryl Braithwaite Music Scholarship is an annual scholarship awarded to a child with exceptional musical talent. Daryl attended Christ Church Grammar and is delighted that this scholarship is named after him.
